Bronze Demon Walnut Figurine

The inspiration for this piece comes from the scene in "Water Margin" where 108 demon kings break free from their seals. With fangs bared and claws extended, the ghosts are vividly depicted on the surface of the lion head walnut, as if ready to break through the chains and leap out under the suppression of the Tai Chi symbol. The lion head shape is dignified and heavy, with a full belly and well-defined edges. The thick edges and rounded points of the walnut are deep and expansive. The large, thick base is divided into two equal parts, with over thirty skull ghost faces in various shapes and sizes carved on both sides, representing the thirty-six heavenly spirits and seventy-two earthly fiends. These fierce ghost faces, alternating and seemingly ready to leap out, replace the traditional tassel patterns on the walnut. The bottom features an irregular distribution of red, orange, and green patinas, reminiscent of bronze artifacts. The recess at the bottom is clean. We have replaced it with the enduring Yin-Yang Bagua symbol of Taoism, signifying the everlasting presence of righteous energy.

The Tai Chi symbol, a Taoist emblem, holds special cultural significance in Taoism. It is a highly representative pattern and symbol in traditional Chinese culture. The symbol is further analyzed into the Eight Trigrams: Qian (Heaven), Kun (Earth), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Li (Fire), Gen (Mountain), and Dui (Lake). These trigrams represent eight natural phenomena used to predict changes in nature and society. The interaction between the forces of Yin and Yang is considered the root of all creation. In the Eight Trigrams, Qian represents male and Kun represents female, and these two trigrams hold particularly important positions.
